Made a clip about Ken Block's new rally car.

I went to Wales a few weeks ago to make a clip for Monster World Rally Team.

To quote Ken:
"Despite the fundamental similarities between stage rally, rallycross and gymkhana, my World Rally championship Ford Fiesta just can't do what my gymkhana Fiesta can, and vice versa. But running three cars is a logistical nightmare, so we built one car that can be transformed to suit each discipline."

MWRT thought stop motion would be a suitable technic to show the car.
The stuff was shot in three days, with less than 30 min (might have been 15) to shoot the car in action.
My thought was to shoot the action on film to compliment the stop motion roots instead of HD video. And I like film so why not?
Many ideas we had for this clip weren't possible to shoot, we had next to zero sleep for 2-3 days and it was one of the most gruesome experiences of my life. If only we had another 1-2 days to shoot it.. the reason for only having a very limited time was technical issues / engines etc that were late and what not.

But here's the result. Not close to what we had envisioned, but it's still serves it's purpose. Hope you like it.

I started a Tumblr blog a few weeks ago but it has turned into a iPhone photo blog more than anything.
I´m also trying to maintain some bloggin at Spatziba but I miss the random outlet that this blog used to be.

Today I´m in Stockholm after a brief trip to Wales, Denmark and Austria. Been filming rally with Ken Block as well as doing a little bit of sightseeing.

Noticed that these songs have been on heavy rotation in my iTunes.

Too the few who still visit this blog I just wanted to mention that I started a new blog today.
My thought with the new blog is to share daily photos and stuff with others than my Facebook friends (I keep getting vibed for uploading a lot of iPhone photos).

WRC Swedish Rally - Day 3

Got to ride along today again. It's pretty wild but for some reason I don't think it's very scary, fun though. Trying to hold a camera still on these roads is not easy.

Filmed for an hour or so on a frozen lake. Pretty nice day on the job. No wind, sunny, and not cold at all.
I also met Mike "MackDawg" McEntire who's in town to film Ken's new car. He was running the most successful snowboard video company back in the 90's but he also made Sick Boys (filmed the first fs boardslide on a handrail EVER and Hokus Pokus (legendary skate video from around 1990).

He was also the first one to hire me to shoot snowboarding back in 1996, so we have a lot of history together, really fun to see him here in Torsby.

WRC Rally Sweden - Day 2

Went out to party with some friends in Oslo. While at the bar I met Swedish snow shredders Chris Sörman and Kalle Ohlsson, very random and I got free drinks from the bartender, that's rare at my local watering holes so I was honored to be recognized in a place I haven't been to in 6 months.
Woke up at 6am, ouch, and got in the car to Torsby Sweden (home of playboy / soccer coach Svennis) where we will stay for a few days to try out tires and shoot photos / video of Ken's new WRC car which gets revealed on Wednesday.

On a Ken Block Rally Mission

For the next week - 10 days I'm going to follow my old boss from DC Shoes, Ken Block, around Scandinavia.
He's now a very successful man behind the wheel. If you don't know what he's capable of I suggest you go to YouTube and search for his name.

I went down to Bregenz, Au and Innsbruck for a few days in November to shoot some stuff for an ongoing series I'm doing with Spatziba called Talking Headz.
The idea is to get to know the talent a little bit better without putting them in a chair and do a contrived standard interview.
To do that we left the tripod at home and chatted with Gigi about things that came to mind during a couple of days in his hometown of Bregenz and Au, the village he grew up in.

Most professional snowboarders make a living spontaneously travelling the globe to find good locations to film and photograph their tricks. These tricks end up in dvd's which sell (or used to sell before internet torrents took over) in snowboard / outdoorsy stores and core magazine and sponsors catalogs etc.
And in these videos (of which I made a handful somewhat successful ones this past decade) there is little or no room to portray the riders personality. I tried to incorporate that in past movies but it's a though sell and a lot of kids who board don't care much for it.
Now since we watch a lot of videos online me and the Spatziba crew thought it would be a good idea to make little short clips of the riders that were personality and lifestyle driven.
Gigi had just come out with a movie with Volcom in the fall of 2010 and Nike, who sponsor his feet, had a launch event for his boot planned and invited me to come document it and try and make something worth watching.
Those three days resulted in these four episodes, hope you like them and I hope to do more of these.
I wouldn't mind making a Tiger Woods series in this format. Or Jay-Z...

Solar Eclipse in Stockholm.

Today most of Sweden got to witness a partial (80%) eclipse. I love these things.
In the late 90's I went to France to see a total eclipse and I will for sure travel to see another one.

Apparently the Faroe Islands and Svalbard will have a total eclipse in 2015 while the north of Sweden will have a partial.

While biking between Manhattan and Hermosa Beach today I started to think about the Thrashin intro and how much that scene shaped my view of California.
The only thing that changed is that more people push mongo now and roller skates are replaced by inlines and other questionable things with wheels.

Spatziba goes under the skin of snowboarding personalities. 90% commentary, 10% action. First man out, Gigi Rüf. Presented with the help from Nike Snowboarding.

Two weeks ago, we went down to Austria to hang out with Gigi for a few days.
Me personally have always been a fan of Gigi so, when we had the opportunity to make this mini series called Talking Headz with Spatziba and dive into his archives, I jumped on it.
We cruised around his hometown Au, Bregenz (where he currently lives) and made a stopover in Innsbruck where Nike had organized a soccer tournament to launch his new boot (which has soccer influences).

Andy Irons Passes Away At Age 32

It is with a heavy heart that we spread this news of Andy Irons’ untimely death. Initial reports have him passing away after getting dengue fever in Puerto Rico where outbreaks have been reported. On Sunday, Andy, 32, withdrew from the Rip Curl Pro Search Puerto Rico citing an illness. According to reports which have yet to be confirmed, Andy was so sick he was unable to board his flight from Dallas to Kauai, got a hotel room, and was found there dead by an employee leaving behind a pregnant wife, family, and world full of friends and fans.

Wednesday morning update: Our deepest fears may be true as multiple sites are reporting that there were prescription medications found next to Irons and his death is being investigated as a possible adverse reaction to medication. An autopsy will be performed today and a toxicology report will also be done, although it will be weeks until those results are in. Reports coming in say that he missed his wake up call at the Grand Hyatt Dallas/Fort Worth, and was found dead at 9:46 a.m. Whatever the reason for his untimely passing, his life and achievements in surfing will be celebrated by all that he touched. Once again, our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to the friends and family of Andy Irons.

Andy will be greatly missed by all.

Andy took the ASP World Tour by storm and won the World Championship in 2002, 2003, and 2004. He will be remembered as the one guy in the world who could regularly beat Kelly Slater and his surfing in waves of consequence will live on forever. Just this year, Andy was one of five surfers we chose to have in the TransWorld SURF surf movie, High Five. His part was last (given to the best performing surfer) and perfectly displayed his legendary backside tube riding skills and man-sized hacks.

Our deepest condolences go out to the friends and family of Andy. Please show respect in your comments as this is a terribly sad day for the family and friends of AI.

Got a call around 11 yesterday morning (yes I was still sleeping) from my friends Vincent and Åsa who wondered if I can shoot an interview with David Lynch in about an hour.
I said yes.

He´s in town to talk about Transcendental Meditation and I must say it was quite intriguing to listen to him talk about it.
Charismatic man indeed.

Vince snapped some photos as well, good day.

I am a huge Twin Peaks fan and I loved his movie Straight Story (top 10 I´ve ever seen). The rest of his work is good too, but those are my favs.
Straight Story made a real impact on me. I had never heard of it and a Swiss friend happened to have the dvd with him while we had cabin fever on a mountain in Norway. He didn´t even recommend it, just said: "I bought it at some airport and it was kinda slow, but you can watch if you like".
Two hours later I had this feeling within that I´ve never had from watching a movie. That´s why I rather not know too much about a movie when I see one. Trailers and reviews kinda ruin the experience for me. I never read the back of dvd where some Warner Bros dude tries to sell me the movie in 10 rows of text.
Go watch it, preferably with your phone off and no Facebooking during the movie:)

This clip with where Angelo Badalamenti explains the workflow between him and Mr Lynch gave me goosebumps. Truly amazing.

Today he came by the Veda House (which happens to be 100 meters from my place) to raise a flag to celebrate that Maharishi Mahesh Yogi came to Sweden 50 years ago to teach Transcendental Meditation and some casual meet and greet.

There was a small crowd loitering around and no press which I thought was pretty cool.

I helped my friend Åsa (her parents run Veda) to film a short interview for the Veda House website.

Yesterdays interview was for an upcoming tv documentary / show by Annika Dopping.

I must say that I´m quite intrigued by this meditation stuff. The way he speaks about it makes me want to try and learn it.
Who wouldn´t want to have more creative thoughts and excelled intuition?

My friend Stian Solberg was running a 3k and the weather was supposed to be good for a while (doesn't happen often) so 4 hours after leaving the bar I was in Oslo.

I know I've been lagging on posting good stuff on here for the past months... sorry. My stats are waaaay down. 500-600 peeps used to visit me every day, now the stats are down to about what an average Swedish 15 year blogger who lives in a town of 8,000 people...

I saw Torstein a few weeks ago and told him that it would be a good idea for him to call me in in a week or three to go shoot a triple cork at one of the resorts in Norway.
Then when I was on a train today our mutual friend Thomas Harstad texted me and said "go check out Torstein´s Facebook".
But since I have a beater phone (due to losing two iPhones in 7 days and not being able to crack any of the two I have left) I couldn´t check it on the subway.
I suspected it had something to do with the triple cork so I called Thomas... Torstein picked up.
I was like "so what´s on your Facebook?". He was vague and didn´t have a response so he passed the phone over to Thomas again.
Thomas refused to tell me what it was about and that pretty much confirmed that Torgmo had done a triple cork, without inviting me! Fucker. These little brats... think they can toy with the old filmer.

I´ll just invoice DC a $35k consulting fee and they don´t need to pay Tortein´s incentive when he wins gold at the X-Games next year. That is unless ESPN comes up with another genius idea like having the American viewers text in the results.

Good on you. I´m stoked you did it before anyone else. But count on a handful of peeps hucking one at the next X-Games.

We got this new camera (Casio EX-FH100) and wanted to try it out today but the windy conditions made us try it out in the driveway and down the street.

It's a fun camera with some pretty high tech features (10x zoom, sequences, sequence morph, slow motion and ramped slow motion in CAMERA).
120 fps looks good, 240 fps a little pixelated and 420 fps is very pixelated.

Eddie wasn't too psyched on his skate shots, but I told him they're just in there to demo the camera. He was almost ok with that.

Here's a clip with Eddie and Stian taking laps in Mammoth while the girls were gettin rad at the Jam.
Todd Richards and DC suit Sean Lake joined us for a few runs at the end of the day.

We also went to Sonora Pass (aka The Garden) the other day to look around.
Stian was definitely on a tanning mission as well.

The parking area at Sonora is usually packed with fellow filmers, photographers and riders but this day we were all by ourselves. Which wasn't surprising considering the snow conditions weren't top notch.

The creative possibilities are virtually endless and VHS aims to entertain everyone, whether they be pros, weekend warriors, kids, teens, fans, haters, or single women between the ages of 20 and 40.

The internet has changed the way snowboard videos are viewed. Declining dvd sales and growing online activity are signs that the old formula of how we film and view videos needs to change. Filming 200 days a year for a 2 min video part doesn´t make as much sense as it used to.

“Times are changing and we want to change with them. I feel like snowboarding has more to offer then a two minute video part at the end of the year. I just want to show people everything that is involved with snowboarding and this is the perfect way.” says Eddie. Pierre also comments “I have been filming for a long time and I am very excited to dive into something where I can combine my Facebook updating skills and my filmmaking.”

VHS is open to work with all snowboarders and companies. The site will launch today, March 24, 2010.

About VHS Creators:

Pierre Wikberg has been professionally filming snowboarding for 13 years. He has created many noteworthy projects such as the Robot Food trilogy and the DC MTN LAB series. Pierre is considered to be one of the most respected filmmakers in the snowboarding industry. A native of Sweden, he usually spends most of his time couch surfing around the world documenting things while looking for the perfect mojito.

Eddie Wall has been a professional snowboarder for ten years. He has produced over 16 video parts, won multiple contests, and has been ranked 8th in world wide coverage over the last 5 years. He currently lives between Mammoth Lakes and San Clemente, CA or wherever his snowboard, skateboard, and guitar take him.

Here are some (a lot) of photos from the past few weeks.
I´m guessing I´ve been in a car for about 2500 miles / 4000 km since I got to the US.
There´s so many things to see here. Even though I´ve been coming here about 40-50 times since I was 17 I´m still impressed with this country.

I´ve been spending a fair amount of time in Southern California and Mammoth.
Right now I´m in Idaho at a place where we filmed a lot for Lame and Afterlame. It´s really nice here. The town closest to us is Ketchum and it´s such a cool ski town. You have to visit to truly grasp the fresh air and positive vibes from everyone.

This week me and Eddie are launching a video blog named "Video Hyper Shred" or VHS. We were going to launch it two weeks ago but we´ve been having issues finding a person who can design it for us (Wordpress). Believe me I had no idea how hard it was to find someone who´d work for less than, well.. a lot of money, to help us out... bit now we´re almost there.
Once it´s live I probably won´t update this blog very often.

Yes I´m still exited about the hockey games, but that´s because I turn into a Neanderthal like everyone else for 2 hours and I choose not to think about how dumb is it so be a patriot and I also obviously ignore how corrupt the Olympics are, no joy if you dwell on that.
It´s like when you´re here in the US. I can´t enjoy it here if I think about how fucked this country is. I just close my eyes, eat my mexican food, drive a truck, consume toys and live in my little bubble. If you start thinking about being solidaric, compassionate and saving the world from greed you can´t hang out here.
So yeah, that´s why I like the hockey games in the Olympics.

Since snowboarders aren´t skiers, but are managed by skiers at the Olympics, things like this will upset people who race gates, or parents and coaches to those who race gates.

Who cares what he does with his medal?
I bet a lot of olympians have done VERY inappropriate things with their medals. And I have no doubt the ones with the weirdest ideas are the ones who appear "proper". Hypocrites.

I might have mentioned this before but the Olympic broadcasting in the US is very lame.
When Phelps won 8 golds and the media here sent the news out live the public went nuts.
They didn´t want to hear what´s happening in China when they are at work.

When Shaun won in 2006 they broadcasted the final half a day after he won. With American flags blowing in the wind (in slow motion I might add, hahaha).
You think Americans opposed to this edited and directed broadcast. No, they think that´s the way it´s supposed to be.

For a Swede the Olympics is live even if it´s 8 hours ahead or 9 hours behind. We set out alarms to watch hockey at 4.30 if we have to.

This year you can watch 3-6 live channels on the Swedish tv website AS WELL as on your iPhone.
Compare lying in your cabin in the boonies or maybe you´re on a bus (which has wifi and 3G obviously) and you can watch 6 channels of live feed on your iPhone to sitting in Los Angeles waiting for NBC to edit the Vonn, White or Jacobellis race to the people at home can watch the patriotic (yes I know the Olympics is all about patriotism, but in the US they take it to another level) version they edited for you.

Japanese boarder Kazu Kokubo didn´t tuck in his shirt when he boarded the plane in Tokyo and was suspended to walk with his countrymen in the opening ceremony. Love it.

It did not help Kokubo's case when he made light of the incident and said the Games were "nothing special" and "just another snowboarding event."

The Japanese ski association wanted to send him back to Japan after he made an public apology, but with a sarcastic undertone.

I don´t really know Dave all that well. He´s mostly an acquaintance through the older people in the snow industry.
He was pro for a while, then got into filming and welding stuff.
He made Subjekt Haakonsen, which I think is one of the best snowboard films ever done.

He lives at a warehouse which holds Nemo design and I´ve spent some serious time there. I spent the 2002-2004 summers there.

I even got to write an intro of sorts for the episode:

Patrik has had a couple of good years behind him to say the least.

Some critics award at the Cannes film festival in 2007, Sundance appearance in 2009 and Sundance premier event in 2010 together with Spike Jonze and then today... ta da.. Academy Award nomination aka Oscar. Impressive.

The above mentioned are all low budget short films so to get that kind of recognition for a film which total budget is less than one day of shooting for a snowboard movie like First Decent is huge.

David filmed all of the above. Good thing he´s better with the camera than the pliers.

Great work guys, very proud of you.

Mike Vallely might be a little out there in some aspects but he´s done some great things with his Drive tv show. I´ve watched a few of them and I´ve gotten this warm feeling about them. Might sound emo but I can´t describe it in other words.
The Jeremias brothers have done a great job with this show. The filming is top notch and so is the directing and post production.

How a tool like John Brenkus gets to be on tv with a clip like this one? Let alone drive a BMW 7-series to work.

Can you find a more pathetic clip about the evolution of snowboarding online I´ll give you a hug.
And this footage was still shot by talented filmers in the know, but Espn literally killed the footage with their direction, narration and editing. And the worst part is that they love it and will continue to do this.
The end sentence is the best:
The corkscrew has the same shape as the double helix, so maybe Shain was born to do this because it´s in his dna.

Training to me is like going to the gym with protein drinks so you can get some tan on your tribal tattoos while sporting your new Dolce shades and Ed Hardy hat.

It´s jock, it´s lame.

I do understand that exercise is healthy, duh, but I never liked the attitude of people who practice, practice, practice, practice to become great and make money and get medals. I just can´t relate.

Sure Peter Forsberg practiced A LOT, but he has the talent too, and it shows + hockey is a jock sport to start with.

When the jock mentality hits skate/snowboarding I tend to look the other way. I totally understand why it´s there, I just don´t want anything to do with it. Hell, "our" sport is run by skiers, at least the olympic part of it. But then again I´m not associating myself with an olympic snowboarder, half pipe or slalom (haha, slalom.. ). Some of those olympic boarders, well most slalom ones, think like skiers.. old school skiers. Like racing gates skiers..

I like snowboarding that takes place on powder and to some extent jumps. Urban snowboarding is what it is and I like documenting it but it´s not what gets me psyched to get in the car (or subway here in Stockholm).
Gigi, Nicolas, Parker and others take care of that for me.

So while reading this article ( I couldn´t read the whole thing, so sorry if I missed something) on Bud Keene who´s a coach for the US olympic team or national team or whatever.. I got a little confused. Like.. really.. he just said that..?
I was never one to really understand what he had to do with any American taking a medal at the olympics.. I mean yes I understand that there are team managers, friends, filmers, riders etc who travel with the talent and push the riders to do better but a coach? Like, oh your head is a tiny bit lower on your double cork than it was last week.. try chucking it harder.. like that? And full time? And probably making over 10k a month doing it, hell probably 20k a month.

I also think that my job as filmer, editor, driver, team manger, baby sitter, drink buyer and coach has been and is rewarding.
I just don´t totally understand Bud´s point of view, or the people who pay him. Cause I do understand it, just not totally.
In the late 90´s a traveled a fair bit with the Swedish and Norwegian national teams and Petter Levin who coached both of them (I think) was a really good guy to have around, but he was more of a friend and possibly team manager and I never saw him as a coach, in the jock sense of the word / profession.

People have been inspired by Shaun's private training ground last winter, and so have been working to get their own special situations set up. We know about most of those situations, and what was accomplished at each, but I can't help feeling that we don't know about all of them. We'll see.

I wouldn´t use the word "inspired". At least that´s not what I´ve heard. And no I don´t see his "special situation set up" comparable to the DC Mtn Lab if anyone made that connection.

I´d like to give the riders more credit and not involve some coach. But when you´re expected (and yes Shaun you will with 99.5% certainty) win the olympics I can see why it would be good to talk to a mental coach who helps you focus and get in the zone. But I´m certain Torstein Horgmo and Halldor Helgason got their gold medals without a couch telling them what to do and they didn´t even get mercy points (Salt Lake pipe olympics + X-Games big air 2009).

My $0.02.

Would have been great to see Danny Davis take the gold.. but not this time. Hope he and Kevin Pearce makes great recoveries and I´m happy Shaun didn´t hurt himself in that nasty, nasty slam from the X-Games (which made Espn hold the broadcast for 30 min.. completely different post/subject though..).

Don´t get me started on the Swedish "national team" and their $2,000.000 budget for the 2006 olympics... gees. Get me into a meeting with those who are/were sponsoring that sinking ship.

I´m not one to be impressed with green screen rigs and the filming that goes with it. It´s just a cheaper and less creative way to recreate something you could shoot in real life.

However, this clip is pretty impressive. Open up my eyes to what is possible. But I´m old school, screw green screen, compositing and post production.

The Church Of Apple showed us the iPad today.
It´s basically a large iPhone. But it will eliminate owning a desktop computer for many people.

I can see myself at a summer house, by the water. Chillin in a hammock with some Brämhults orange juice and browsing the web or watching last nights hockey recap on my iPad. I might actually have to buy a summer house before I buy an iPad, I need one that much.. haha.
